In the Dark of the Morning a Question is Asked

I often walk my dog in the pre-dawn hours. It's my way of transitioning from sleep into the day ahead, the quiet and dark of our morning walks allows me to sort through the leftover thoughts and dreams from the night before and think about the day in front of me.

We are usually alone as we walk, birds awakening, some of our neighbors rising as a window shines light here and there. The morning planets - Venus, Jupiter, Mars - shine above us and the ever changing moon marks our progress in the month.

This morning, as I walked, I contemplated the many changes and decisions I'm facing. I prayed for a sign to let me know which way to go or if I'm on the right track.

Nearing the end of our walk, as I approached home, I heard someone whistling behind us. I turned to look, because I had not heard or seen anyone else on the streets.

A man on a bike, in an Australian accent, shouted out as he passed by "It's five fucking am in the fucking morning. What have you started?"

Signs and messages are always welcome. Thankful for today's wake up message.

Dawn Comes Early

Unable to sleep, I stop fighting for what I cannot have.

The pre-dawn breeze through the open window is cold,

Spring needs a winter coat this morning.

A mourning dove is huddled on the edge of the roof,

and sings a cooing song...

calling the dawn.

Slowly, the world catches up and the light returns...

and with the light, glory.

A Pre-Dawn Walk

Pre-dawn walking is encouraged in Virginia in August. It is cooler, quieter, and you can be alone with your thoughts. The dog walks with me and we walk the neighborhood streets, a single star still visible in the pre-dawn sky looming over us. An occasional car drives by, some early to work, some just getting home. Here and there, evidence of other risers. A jogger in the distance, the faint sounds of his shoes on the pavement. A light comes on in the house to the left of us, the blue light of a television flickers in the window of another house.

Cicadas hum in the bushes, and the birds, just rising, sing to waken the sun. Time to head home, start the coffee, and begin another day of work.
