Make Every Day a Special Occasion

A change in my living arrangements required the division of household goods. The "good" everyday flatware was given up and I got the lesser 'make-do' flatware.

Using the less than lovely utensils was a daily reminder of settling, making do with something I had accepted for necessity but not for it's beauty.

In talking to a friend about the flatware I was reminded of my grandmother's silver. Beautiful in look and feel, grandmother's silver was carefully packed away in the basement, being saved for special occasions.

Grandmother's silver

Why do we save the best for other people? For special occasions? Why don't we treat ourselves as our own special guests?

I promptly donated the unloved stainless steel flatware, someone else will make good use of it. I unpacked grandmother's silver and use it everyday.

Every single time I pick up one of grandmother's silver pieces, a fork, a knife, a spoon, I am grateful to have something so beautiful to use. It is a true pleasure to have my every day be a special occasion, even if I'm the only one at the table.

What can you do to treat yourself as a special guest in your own life?

Have Courage

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ~Anais Nin

She stood alone, watching the clouds move across the sky,

Glorying in the feel of the wind in her hair, the sun on her face.

A trio of ravens flew by, their ink darkness, a contrasting punctuation in the light.

The path beyond the gate stretched ahead of her, calling her to explore.

A breath, almost a sigh, blew past her lips.
Words and thoughts crowding into her throat and stuck by the lack of someone to speak the words to.

Live a life dictated and confined by your fears and you will find you have a life that is small in scope, lacking in joy. It may be a fine life, it may even be satisfying, but it will not be large.

Our time on earth is so short, barely a moment – that to spend it locked into a small box with our fears seems to be such a sad waste.

Sometimes we must do the hardest thing, defy the rules, break the bonds of our tribe to find joy and happiness, to live the fullest life.

The Dream that Lingers

Waking to loss,
a sorrowing that runs a thread through the day.

The dream
lingers,
like foggy mist clinging
to the trees.

Even as the sun struggles through the grayness.

Dreaming of the beloved, and
of a life that is not,
may not ever,
Be.

How to Forget

She had forgotten,
what was possible...
So managed to live a quiet, steady life.

Veil lifted to reveal,
The enormity of possibility overwhelmed.

Standing on the edge of life,
She wondered how to forget, if she could forget,
What she now remembered.

Seven (7) Haiku

1.
If you only knew,
how often I think of you.
Could you stay away?

2.
The singing birds of dawn,
find me already awake.
I am fleeing dreams.

3.
The day's duties call,
the dog must go outside.
I wait for the light.

4.
Dream mist enfolds me.
I am caught between two worlds.
Light can set me free.

5.
The cool air of night,
drifts through the open window.
I stand, shivering.

6.
I ask for guidance.
I can hear only silence.
I wait for a sign.

7.
Rain strikes the window.
The bed is warm, my room dark.
You sleep, I must go.

A Small Prayer

bless me,

Father, Mother, God.

for I am a puny thing

and my spirit wearies even as I know I should go on.

give me strength and light.

let me believe when believing seems foolish.

let me dream when the sun is strong.

let me live when life seems darkest.

let me be and I will do and do and do....

bless me and I will be eternally grateful.

Who Am I?

I will be the river of the dreams around your mind
I will be the essence of all you cannot find

I will be the reason that keeps you warm at night
I will keep you dancing until the dark is bright

I'll hold you close together when all else falls apart
I'll give you strength and loving -
so you may know your heart

Rest easy little dancer
Put your cares away
I'll be right beside you
Some bright and shining day

Know that I do love you
Now and for all time
Close your eyes and see me
in the shadows of your mind

Listen for me closely
I'll not be speaking loud
You'll know me by my answers
Just as you did before

So go about your living
I'll be there before long
Keep your heart believing
And I'll hold you every dawn.

These Dreams

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
~Heart, "These Dreams"

I woke this morning to a sorrowing sense of loss; my night dreams had been filled with lost
love restored and a world that felt more real then the world I was waking to. The light of day
is mistily obscured by the lingering fog of the night's dreams. I wait for the night to come
again so I may re-enter that other life.
