Love Me Enough

Love me enough to step out of your cage

Let the wild you meet me
without bars between us

The door is open, step out, shed your tame self, let the wild you free

Move boldly to me, take the treats I offer from my hands, lick the leftover juices from my fingers

Walk in the sunlight with me, feel the warmth against your skin, our skin

Come with me to the water, feel the cool silk of wet against your skin, our skin

You stop to look over your shoulder, the cage door is open

You shrink away, I feel you leave, I let you go

You slowly turn back, close the door, and pace in your cage

I stand in the sunlight with it's warmth on my skin,
only my skin;
I feel the cool water lapping against me,
only me.

Beloved

Beloved,
Can you hear me calling you?

Run away with me.

Let's find a place where we can dance in the moonlight
and drink wine until we are both silly and giggling.

Remember how you kissed me that first time?

You touched my face and said, "I'm going to kiss you."
And, my life flew into a different trajectory.

Beloved,
Can you hear me calling you?

Idioms and Thoughts

It's a gray, rainy, almost chilly spring day. It is spring so the birds are noisy, there are flowers, and green things are greening. But it is also gray, and all my weekend plans - which involved being outdoors - have been cancelled or altered because of the rain. So the gray rain has started my thoughts down a darker path.

I was thinking of a phrase, "Happy enough" that I heard on the Netflix series, 'Grace and Frankie.' Grace (Jane Fonda) uses it when her husband Robert (Martin Sheen) asks her how she felt about their marriage after he has just asked her for a divorce. Happy enough. I've never wanted happy enough - which is evident by the way my life has evolved. I've wanted happy or not, good not bad, all in or all out.

The next phrase, maybe even a counter-point to 'happy enough' is 'better than nothing.' While I've often rejected 'happy enough' I found myself, yesterday, flipping out the 'better than nothing' phrase. I had planned to send the entire day with a beloved friend, but work and life got in the way and our day turned into a few hours. I said, well a few hours with you is 'better than nothing.' Which actually is not true - nothing is nothing - it's a void that can turn into a sorrowful well.

A few hours with a loved friend can be wonderful, as long as the focus is on present - not on the missing hours or the unknown future.

Better than nothing, far, far better. Because we never know how much time we have to spend with those we love, so even a few hours can be precious.

Burnt Offerings

This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet. Rumi

The full moon, February's Snow Moon, marks a transition. Full moon to new moon, casting off the old, embracing the new. The cycle ends, and begins again. Time to let go.

On the eve of the full moon I took scraps of paper and wrote out feelings, beliefs, habits, thoughts - all of which I wanted to release, let go of. I took a silver bowl, filled it with the scraps of paper, and burnt the scraps into ash. The smoke spiraled up, carrying all of those words, into the silver light of the full moon. As the ashes cooled, I added a rose. The heat turned it black, but it held it's shape and it's promise of beauty.

Loved and Lost

This week I've traveled to Atlanta to photograph old cars (more on that later). But first, I wanted to visit Oakland Cemetery. Oakland has beautiful gardens and memorial statues.

One of the many reasons I wanted to visit Oakland was to visit this memorial to love. I'd seen it before but had neglected to read the inscription and the accompanying engraved plaques. The statue tells it's own story - a man and a woman leaning into each other. She is resting against him, her arm along his side. She's wearing a dress with bare feet, and gazing into the distance. He's turned toward her and totally focused on her while he combs her long hair. They are lovers, the tenderness and devotion is almost palpable.

The inscription: "To Love. To Passion. To Deb."

The engraved plaques tell more of the story. Deb, Deborah, was born in 1953 and she died in 2006 at age 53. Gerald, was born in 1959, his plaque awaits a second date...he lives on without her.

Loved and lost.

Oakland Cemetery:
Land for Oakland was purchased in 1850 and it was designed as a Victorian "rural" garden cemetery. Over the years it grew, and was eventually surrounded by the city of Atlanta and industry...still the gardens are beautiful, under renovation, and a quiet oasis. There's a lot more to the history of Oakland, it is now on the National Register of Historic Places, you can find more information here: http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/

Hope

I hope for a time when we can hug for minutes instead of seconds,
and we can look into each other's eyes as long as we like.

I hope for days when we don't care about the ticking of the clock
because we'll be hypnotized by the beating of our hearts.
That's how we will spend our days.

I hope for days where we will say I love you more than just thinking it
and we will cry out our tears instead of holding them in.

I hope for days where we can wear our hearts on the outside,
and stand in the sun as one.

If Only I Had Known

If only I had known that day

was the last day

with you.

I would have paid

more attention.

I would have kissed

you longer.

Held you closer.

And I would

have never

ever

let you go.

Two Prayers for Sunday

Divine Beloved. Please change me into someone who trusts
that the best outcome to this situation is already chosen.

Change me into someone who relaxes and lets go.

Change me, Divine Beloved, into One who wishes to genuinely
let You take the lead.

Let me know true surrender, openness, and acceptance.

Take over my actions, so I know when to act, and when to pause.

The Dream that Lingers

Waking to loss,
a sorrowing that runs a thread through the day.

The dream
lingers,
like foggy mist clinging
to the trees.

Even as the sun struggles through the grayness.

Dreaming of the beloved, and
of a life that is not,
may not ever,
Be.

Reading Rumi

But listen to me:
for one moment,
quit being sad.
Hear blessings dropping their blossoms
around you. God.
~ Rumi, The Essential Rumi

I want to see you.

Know your voice.

Recognize you when
you first come 'round
the corner.

Sense your scent when I come into a room
you've just left.

Know the lift of your heel,
the glide of your foot.

Become familiar with the way you purse your lips
then let them part, just the slightest bit,
when I lean in to your space and kiss you.

I want to know the joy
of how you whisper 'more.'
~ Rumi, The Essential Rumi

My sweet heart,
you have aroused my passion,
your touch has filled me
with desire,
I am no longer separate
from you,
these are precious moments,
I beseech you,
don’t let me wait.
~ Rumi, The Essential Rumi

Let Go

Let go.
Let your sorrows and fears drift on the wind, float away.

Let go.
See the world with new eyes and fresh hope,
For a new dream, a dream realized, a dream fulfilled.

Some day, some day soon,
Your dream will come floating into your life,
As light and as gentle as a feather.

That dream will be yours to keep,
That dream will be your own to cherish.

Let go so that your empty hands can receive,
And your lonely heart be filled with love.

Let go.
Bless me father, mother, god
Hold me in your light
Let me be gentle and kind and fearless.

Let go.

Seven (7) Haiku

1.
If you only knew,
how often I think of you.
Could you stay away?

2.
The singing birds of dawn,
find me already awake.
I am fleeing dreams.

3.
The day's duties call,
the dog must go outside.
I wait for the light.

4.
Dream mist enfolds me.
I am caught between two worlds.
Light can set me free.

5.
The cool air of night,
drifts through the open window.
I stand, shivering.

6.
I ask for guidance.
I can hear only silence.
I wait for a sign.

7.
Rain strikes the window.
The bed is warm, my room dark.
You sleep, I must go.

A Small Prayer

bless me,

Father, Mother, God.

for I am a puny thing

and my spirit wearies even as I know I should go on.

give me strength and light.

let me believe when believing seems foolish.

let me dream when the sun is strong.

let me live when life seems darkest.

let me be and I will do and do and do....

bless me and I will be eternally grateful.

Who Am I?

I will be the river of the dreams around your mind
I will be the essence of all you cannot find

I will be the reason that keeps you warm at night
I will keep you dancing until the dark is bright

I'll hold you close together when all else falls apart
I'll give you strength and loving -
so you may know your heart

Rest easy little dancer
Put your cares away
I'll be right beside you
Some bright and shining day

Know that I do love you
Now and for all time
Close your eyes and see me
in the shadows of your mind

Listen for me closely
I'll not be speaking loud
You'll know me by my answers
Just as you did before

So go about your living
I'll be there before long
Keep your heart believing
And I'll hold you every dawn.
